ABSTRACT AND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: DIFFERENT OR SIMILAR???

Hey guys do you often get confused between an abstract and executive summary? Are the characteristics of an executive summary and an abstract the same? Are they same or different? Are they two different sides of a single coin?
Do you find it difficult to answer these questions? No worries… Answer a simple one! If your friend and you, both like Continental Cuisine, can we consider both of you to be twins? The answer is NO. Same is the case between ABSTRACT and EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.
They are definitely not the same except for the fact that:
1) Both are excluded of the main word count of the coursework
2) Both are written once you are done with the work but pasted before introduction (in a separate page).
Let us now go through the differences:
1) An abstract is usually of 400 words whereas an executive summary can be within 200-250 words
2) Note that most of the research papers and articles are prefaced by a suitable abstract whereas business reports or case study oriented coursework are usually prefaced by an executive summary
3) An abstract gives an overview of the whole text whereas executive summary is the text about the text. REMEMBER: Executive summary is different from Introduction because introduction just introduces the topic and leads to the main body of the work/text.
4) Abstract is a gist of the entire work, encompasses the subject material of the research paper in a complete nutshell whereas executive summary is just a concise outline of the primary points in the report. No fine details should be provided in an executive summary. It has to be just a commentary of main headings and sub headings based on the identified issue.
5) Abstract is an orientation whereas executive summary is condensed version.
6) For an abstract, each sentence should have new information from every section of the research article, in the same order.Tentatively each sentences provides new information so that within half to one page the concise summary is presented. However, in case of executive summary, you just give that much information that helps the investors realize whether the company has potential without even reading the entire report.
7) Although the abstract of different research papers are a bit different, thereby depending on the topic but they do follow the same writing criteria such as Background, Aim, Research Methods, Primary Finding and Result and Conclusion. Nonetheless, executive summaries tend to differ as per the different business models used in different companies.
8) In an abstract you do not mention the suggested recommendation whilst in an executive summary you must mention the recommendation.
9) Hey hope you are clear now with the difference between abstract an executive summary. Wait!!! Is there anybody whose head is still spinning? Here is a better remedy for you…

Simply explaining, an abstract gives you an idea of what is there in the research paper in a brief form whereas an executive summary simply summarises the ways by which, the execution of the entire report is done.
