FORMATTING AND PRESENTATION: IS IT A NECESSITY OR WASTAGE OF TIME???

Just imagine you are ready to go for a date with someone for the first time! You are so excited about the meeting… Eventually you meet the person but Oh My God!!! The appearance of the person is not at all appreciable. The entire presentation is not acceptable.
This is exactly the same in case of your coursework writing.
1) FIRST IMPRESSION IS THE LAST IMPRESSION: Formatting and Presentation impresses the Supervisor at the very first go! You will be happy to know that the first impression remains till the end. The Supervisor definitely has a positive approach while checking your assignment if it satisfies the Formatting and Presentation criteria.
2) GOOD PACKAGING: Imagine yourself going for shopping. Will you prefer to buy a product which is properly packaged, sealed and specifically labelled, thereby meeting the Labelling Regulations Act or opt any random product, which is not attractive?
It is exactly the same case here! Formatting and Presentation is like packaging of your assignment. It acts as the wrapper of the gift box! It helps in promoting your assignment in the eyes of the Supervisor. It heightens your work at a BETTER Level!!!
3) LOOKS NEAT AND TIDY: If the assignment looks neat and tidy, there are chances that the Supervisor feels interested to go through it carefully, thereby reading between the lines. The appearance has to be neat and clear.
4) ATTRACTIVE YET PROFESSIONAL: In order to hold the attention of your Supervisors for a long period so that they go in-depth of your assignment. You need to make your assignment attractive by adding tabular, statistical, figurative and graphical representations. Moreover, with the help of few highlighted areas (like bold, italics and underlined), you can bring the main points into the notice of the Supervisors.
However, REMEMBER this is an academic piece of writing!

  •  So it has to be professional and formal.
  • DO NOT use too catchy or bombastic words as headings or sub headings
  • DO NOT highlight too many words as Bold, Italics and Underlined

5) COHERENT STRUCTURE: For an appropriate structure the basic criteria is to follow the assignment questions and build a coherent framework. Once you are done, believe 50% of your head ache is cured! Now, you surely know, where to proceed and how to proceed???
6) SCOPE TO GAIN MORE MARKS: You have often wondered how it is that you friend has got those few extra marks… You scratch your head to think!!! Formatting and Presentation of an assignment stand out as a significant aspect for obtaining HIGHER GRADES!

So next time, when you have to do an assignment, make sure never to neglect the formatting and presentation of the work. REMEMBER professors do allot marks for all sorts of assignments!!!

ABSTRACT AND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: DIFFERENT OR SIMILAR???

Hey guys do you often get confused between an abstract and executive summary? Are the characteristics of an executive summary and an abstract the same? Are they same or different? Are they two different sides of a single coin?
Do you find it difficult to answer these questions? No worries… Answer a simple one! If your friend and you, both like Continental Cuisine, can we consider both of you to be twins? The answer is NO. Same is the case between ABSTRACT and EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.
They are definitely not the same except for the fact that:
1) Both are excluded of the main word count of the coursework
2) Both are written once you are done with the work but pasted before introduction (in a separate page).
Let us now go through the differences:
1) An abstract is usually of 400 words whereas an executive summary can be within 200-250 words
2) Note that most of the research papers and articles are prefaced by a suitable abstract whereas business reports or case study oriented coursework are usually prefaced by an executive summary
3) An abstract gives an overview of the whole text whereas executive summary is the text about the text. REMEMBER: Executive summary is different from Introduction because introduction just introduces the topic and leads to the main body of the work/text.
4) Abstract is a gist of the entire work, encompasses the subject material of the research paper in a complete nutshell whereas executive summary is just a concise outline of the primary points in the report. No fine details should be provided in an executive summary. It has to be just a commentary of main headings and sub headings based on the identified issue.
5) Abstract is an orientation whereas executive summary is condensed version.
6) For an abstract, each sentence should have new information from every section of the research article, in the same order.Tentatively each sentences provides new information so that within half to one page the concise summary is presented. However, in case of executive summary, you just give that much information that helps the investors realize whether the company has potential without even reading the entire report.
7) Although the abstract of different research papers are a bit different, thereby depending on the topic but they do follow the same writing criteria such as Background, Aim, Research Methods, Primary Finding and Result and Conclusion. Nonetheless, executive summaries tend to differ as per the different business models used in different companies.
8) In an abstract you do not mention the suggested recommendation whilst in an executive summary you must mention the recommendation.
9) Hey hope you are clear now with the difference between abstract an executive summary. Wait!!! Is there anybody whose head is still spinning? Here is a better remedy for you…

Simply explaining, an abstract gives you an idea of what is there in the research paper in a brief form whereas an executive summary simply summarises the ways by which, the execution of the entire report is done.

CORRECTION: REWORK OR REDO????

Hey guys after the whole week’s toil and taking the pain of doing the assignment, it really feels bad when the professor strikes through some of the areas and sends back for correction!!! You really feel demoralised and sad, feeling soooo low!!! You really do not understand what went wrong?? Why is it that your friend has got more marks?
Heyyyy it is ok! Do not panic next time when you get an amendment work because here you will find some of the best ways to handle it:
1) Stay Cool- You can never do any work properly if you do not have a stable state of mind! So no point to panic, Stay Cool! Have a cup of coffee and GET SET GO!
2) Concentrate on the comments: Go through the Professor’s comments thoroughly. See what he is asking exactly? Where are the areas that you have fallen short? Where to improve? What to add? Unless you identify these things clearly there is no point in starting the amendments.
3) Identify a rework or redo: DO NOT panic when your supervisor sends back your work! Please note Ã  you need to clearly understand whether your supervisor wants a rework (make few amendments in certain sections) or a redo (entire change). A rework is needed when you need to improvise on certain section whereas a redo is required when you have failed to meet any of the assessment criteria and the assignment went wrong.
4) Plan the work: You need to work as per the professor’s feedback. You need to see which sections require the change. DO NOT JUST STARTING DOING IT! See whether you have sufficient material to do the correction or else do some more research.
5) Plan the word count: Based on the nature of the amendment (rework or redo), you need to plan how many words are to be changed. Do not just keep on writing and writing. As I have also stated, you should see whether it is a redo or rework.
1 more thing!!! When you are adding material, make sure that you are also deleting some words from the sections which are irrelevant. REMEMBER! The total word count should remain the same as it was in the earlier stage! In the hurry, please DO NOT forget to check the word count before submission.
6) Enhance evaluation:
Since most of the corrections demand proper evaluation, therefore try to concentrate on it! DO NOT make the work Descriptive! Try to find specific information about the concerned industry or companies. Use accurate facts and statistics, be argumentative and evaluative! REMEMBER the content should not be written only for the sake of clearing the rework!!!
7) Additional Referencing:
When you have done the amendments, make sure to add few references in the list. It is obvious that, if you are adding some content in the assignment, you are referring to an academic book/journal/website. Mention it in the list. Hey one more thing! Surely put in-texts in the newly added content to maintain its authenticity. Also do not forget to check the referencing format once more before submitting. Do not mix APA with HARVARD style or vice-versa.
8) Update TOC: Once the amendments are done, make sure that you update the table of contents (TOC), list of tables and list of figures. You know why??? This is because when you have added or deleted any heading or subheadings, it should be updated in the TOC. The old TOC will not have the changes. Hey! 1 more thing. If you are adding or deleting words, DO NOT forget to update TOC because it needs changes in the pages numbers.
9) Use Red Ink: Go to Home Page --> Select [A] option --> Choose Red Ink. You know why I am asking you to do the amendment in red ink? It is because to help you as well as the professor to understand where the necessary changes are done and how many words are invested to do it. It clearly distinguishes the previous work with the present.

10) No Silly Mistakes: One special instruction! DO NOT REPEAT any SILLY MISTAKE! Since your professor is a bit dissatisfied with your work, therefore please do not leave any scope for complaint this time… Thoroughly PROOFREAD and check your work. NO typo error, spelling error or grammatical error!!!

PULL DOWN THE CURTAINS-HOW TO WRITE A CONCLUSION?

Hey! What about watching a movie for a couple of hours and then coming across an end which is not at all impactful? Will you overlook the concluding part since the movie has been good overall or will you feel that your money is wasted? Definitely the second option is chosen by almost all of you! This is exactly the case when you are writing the conclusion of your assignment. No matter how impactful or critically evaluated your entire work is! Unless your assignment has a convincing conclusion, there are high chances that your professor may not be impressed! You may be confused that although you have done such a well-researched work, how is it that your friend has scored more than you???
Hey it is ok! Do not panic so much! Here is a helping hand for you to know how to write a conclusion. Firstly, you need to know that the Conclusion section of a paper is supposed to be the final impression. It is your last chance to make your point to be reached to your professor.
Here are few guidelines which you can follow to improve your style of writing a conclusion:
  • It should not be just a Tail of an Assignment!!!!  --> Although it comes at the end yet you should give special focus
  • 10% of the total assignment
  • Needs to have at least 4 or 5 strong sentences
  • Review the main analysis and your understanding from it --> DO NOT SUMMARISE THE HEADINGS AND SUB HEADINGS
  • Try to link the conclusion with the assignment title and your thesis statement
  • DO NOT add any new materials. REMEMBER! U will not like the entry of a new film actor at the end of a movie!!! Similarly no new point or angle in the conclusion
How to write a conclusion- Different styles
  • Logical Conclusion:  Mostly apt for the argumentative type of assignments, Logical Conclusion, is where two or more than two sides of a particular issue
  • Rhetorical Question based Conclusion: This is considered to be one step shorter in case of providing a logical conclusion. In fact, instead of ending the conclusion with a specific note, you can leave the concerned reader with a particular question as far as Rhetorical Question based Conclusion is concerned. This actually can lead him/her to derive his/her own conclusions.
  • Opinion or Speculation based Conclusion: You will be happy to know Opinion or Speculation based Conclusion is good enough for those assignments where the students stands out unable to emerge with a clear decision or specific answer in relation to the research done. However, please note that it does mean that you will write a vague conclusion!!! This kind of conclusion actually opens more scope to the writer in providing more of his/her opinion.
  • Recommendation based Conclusion: One of the best kinds of conclusion is recommendation based Conclusion where the writer not only concludes based on his/her understanding but also provides a set of recommendations. The recommendations are given with a motive to eradicate or lower the negative impact of the issue/issues that is/are identified.
  • Summary Conclusion: Sometimes conclusions are expected to be simple re-statement of the done thesis. Summary Conclusion simply summarises the main points. Please note try to avoid such kind of conclusion if not asked because it does not show your ability of understanding.

SLOW BUT GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT WINS THE RACE!!!

Let us go back to your school days… Remember when you were in Standard II your teachers used to tell you to concentrate on grammar. Your language used to instruct you to use “is” after “This” and “are” after “These”. Hey do you remember how you used ask your teacher that if we should use “has” after singular subject, then why do we use “have” after “I”? If “They” should be accompanied with “are” then why do we write “You are”?
Having grown up, you have realized that the usage of correct grammar is mandatory for any sort of academic writing. However, when you have submission pressure, you tend to miss out on some of the grammatical specifications!!! So let us quickly recapitulate!
Conjunctions: Do not begin a sentence with conjunctions like “AND” and “BUT”. REMEMBER CONJUNCTIONS are supposed to be like “GLUE”. It has to be put in between two or more things!!!!
Be careful of the usage of the prepositions: Prepositions help in directing the actions done by the subject. Use the correct prepositions to bring out the correct meaning of the sentences. Hope you know the difference between “look over” and “overlook”, “come out” and “outcome”, “income” and “come in”, “beside” and “besides”. You should also know where to make the correct use of “across”, “through”, “over”, “above”.
Punctuation Marks: Do not underestimate them! They are not mere ink dots or scratches.
i) There are huge differences between a full-stop (.) comma (,) colon (:) and semi-colon (;). Although these four looks like twin sisters yet there are differences. Let me give you a small home work of finding out the difference between them!
ii) When to capitalize a noun (example-cup and World Cup)
iii) Using the apostrophe (in case of possessive nouns)
Usage of Tenses:
DO NOT MIX between PRESENT, PAST & FUTURE TENSE. Seems to be a hotch-potch!!!
Types of Sentences:
i) Use ‘ASSERTIVE’ type of a sentence-ending with full stop (.)
ii) NO usage of ‘INTERROGATIVE’ type of a sentence-having words like HOW? WHAT? in between sentences
iii) NO usage of IMPERATIVE type of sentences- sentences which have a sense of request, command or order
iv) NO usage of EXCLAMATORY sentences- sentences that end with exclamation mark (!)
Usage of Voice:
i) Use ACTIVE VOICE
ii) Avoid using PASSIVE VOICE
Usage of speeches:
i) Use INDIRECT SPEECH
ii) Cannot use DIRECT SPEECH
Usage of Narratives:
i) NO FIRST PERSON or SECOND PERSON NARRATIVE like “I/We found that it is appropriate to use Hofstede’s Model while evaluating…” or THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE like He/She. (Exception: Reflection Report)
ii) U should use NEUTRAL NARRATIVE “The researcher focuses on the application of the Hofstede’s Model while analysing…” or “This research/study aims in…”
Avoid any VAGUE words or phrases:
Every sentence needs to be meaningful and to-the-point. You cannot beat around the bushes!!!
Use the FULL FORMS of words
Rather than: 'TV', 'memo', or 'quote' You could try: 'television', 'memorandum' or 'quotation'
Avoid CONTRACTIONS
Rather than; 'don't', ‘isn’t’, 'can't', 'it's', 'should've', You can try: 'do not', 'cannot', 'it is', 'should have'
You can use ACRONYMS like PESTLE, SWOT, NGO, CSR, and CRM
Avoid ABBREVIATIONS like E.g., Ex.
Avoid using TABOO LANGUAGE like “The Blacks”, “The Whites”, “The Negroes”, “The Untouchables”

Avoid COLLOQUIAL WORDS like cool, hot, fantabulous, kind of, as well as

APPROACHES TO ACADEMIC ASSIGNMENTS

Being admitted in the college, the early few months have really been full of fun, excitement and enjoyable. Once the days are moving on and the professors have started pacing up their speed in completing the stipulated syllabus, you really feel the heat and the push to join the rat race!
By this time, few of the coursework have also started coming in. It is at this point that you have started working how to complete… no wait… how to even start them???? Right?
Moreover, the professors blurt out few words which really do not understand. While some say make your work informational others demand it to be analytical. The words like argumentative, expressive and reflective have also come to your ears at some point or the other. You really do not know what to do with them!!!!
First of all, it is important for you to know that all these terms indicate variant approaches to work on academic assignments. Just imagine you are a team leader in an organisation, thereby having 5 employees working under you. While 1 of your subordinates is obedient enough to listen and follow your instructions, the other 2 are stubborn and have no interest to learn. The fourth one is absolutely ignorant of what occurs around and the fifth one knows nothing except flattering his seniors. Now, you need to have different approaches to handle each one of them. One particular approach will not be apt for everyone. Similarly different assignments demand different approaches
Let’s disclose the meanings of the approaches:
Informational: In case your professor wants your work to be informational, he demands your assignment to be summarised and synthesised with detailed information depending on a particular subject. It is obvious that none of us would prefer an adulterated whisky! It has to be neat whisky on the rocks! Each of your sentences should be weighed with concrete facts. DO NOT USE FILLERS! You cannot pull one concept sentence after sentence and write a huge paragraph on it. REMEMBER if you pull a rubber band continuously, it will tear after a point!
Analytical: When a professor asks you to be analytical he expects you to closely examine the relation between the different parts as well as between the parts and the whole assignment. You need to showcase your ability to compare and contrast between different ideas. Always REMEMBER! Your work should not be a patchwork of information. It should link between each of the tasks and even in its entirety.
Argumentative: Be careful this time! If your professor stresses to make your assignment, it means he wants to judge your ability of making a stand in either of the sides and then backing up your claim with concrete facts and evidences. Developing an argumentative paper is not same as quarrelling with your friend over a trivial issue like colour of the bike!
Expressive: In order to make your paper expressive, you need to concentrate on the significance and applicability of personal experiences. You can give details of the personal experiences (considering yourself to be the learner).
Reflective: Simply focussing on the term, it is clear enough that reflective approach refers to the reflection of the obtained knowledge. In fact, it stresses on the learner’s ability to view the experiences on a retrospective note and then signify what has been learnt from them. It is all about learning processes involved, the contribution of the obtained knowledge in making developments in a learner. It refers to personal and professional development.
Please note, you are not supposed to write about the experiences; rather you have to write what you have learnt from those experiences!

Since you are well-acquainted with the approaches now, therefore you know which style can be applied where! DO NOT be scare anymore!
